The Problem
Nowadays, the gap between the rich and the poor is quite large in this world. There still are many poor kids who do not have the ability to afford new living and school supplies and toys. Even though we have many donation organizations today, these donation methods cannot build an emotional connection efficiently between donors and donees.
For this project, I am intending to build a good relationship between the donors and recipients, in order to help more poor kids in a more efficient, pleasant, and empathetic way.
Challenges and Goals
In China, families are encouraged to have two or more children. Children's clothes, books, and toys become unused items that take up space in the home as the children grow up. How can we promote families to donate rather than throw these things away?
There are many giving organizations in the world. How can the donation service I designed stand out and be different?
What’s the problem?
70% of families have idle clothes, toys, and books for their kids.
42% of idle things will ultimately become waste.
70% of people do not know where to donate.
90% of people are willing to donate.
100% of people would love to know where are the destinations of their donations.
User Research
Jia
Mother of a five-year-old son
As my child grows rapidly, I have to buy new clothes and buy new toys continuously to fit my baby's size and hobby. What worries me the most is my baby's idle clothing. There are so many clothes and toys that my baby will never wear or play with again. I really want to donate them to poor kids, because I am a mom. But the donation place is far from my home, so it is hard for me to get so many donations to the store.
Mother of two kids
Zhang
I did want to resell my kids' secondhanded clothes and toys, but no one bought them on the platform. Maybe, I thought many people would think they are not sanitary, so I gave it up.
Persona
Zheng
39 years old
Married and having two kids
She wants her house to be clean.
GOALS
She doesn't want things she doesn't use often to take up too much space in the house.
She wants to sell her kids' clothes, toys, and books after they grow up.
She wants to sell or donate things more easily because she doesn't want to spend much time on them.
She wants to help poor kids and build emotional connections with them.
I did some market research on other donation organizations and see how they work.
More Research
The most popular donation organization in the U.S. is GOODWILL. people can donate their clothes, toys, shoes, etc. to GOODWILL, which can really help people get rid of unused items in their homes. However, GOODWILL does not sterilize the donated clothes before selling them.
Most online donation organizations only allow the monetary donation, which donors will feel somewhat untrustful towards these organizations because donors will never know if their money really helps the poor.
Opportunities
More Available Ways to Donate
Provide more opportunities and ways for donations, so people will feel more comfortable and convenient with donating.
Enhancing Credibility
Provide a way for donors to track where their donations are going. It can also establish a connection between donors and recipients.
Disinfection
Provide a disinfection process after people donate. It can ensure health and safety issues.
Co-design and Concept Development
As I designed this system, I am not sure if it looks good and works well with other people. Therefore, I built a paperboard model to show the donation system and ask their opinions on this system.
