About

This project is about Typographic Voice and Visual Narrative. I selected Jo March as my main persona and designed typefaces for her.

Jo March is the main character in the movie Little Women. In the film, She spoke out for herself, proudly shunning female etiquette and fashion and impossibly succumbing to the pressures of women of her time, which attracts me a lot.

01/ Jo March

Books

typeface Material

As we mentioned Jo March, the first thing that came to our mind was books. Jo loved to read and would spend hours doing so. Therefore, I believe books can be a perfect representation of her.

About

02/ Unjust ends

Ice cream

typeface Material

In the film, Jo’s sister, Beth passed away due to illness. Jo thought it was an unjust end for both Beth and her family since Beth is so kind and young. Most people would think an unjust end means bad things, however, it could be understood in multiple ways. After Beth’s death, Jo converted the sadness into motivation and she became a good writer. The feeling of unjust ends is undecided and adventurous, just like ice cream that you have to taste to know its flavor.

About

03/ Marriage or Death

typeface Material

Soap foam

In the 19th century, women were required to be housewives to take care of their families, and only men could get a job and work. Many women compromised their fate, and Jo's sister Meg was no exception, marrying John. However, Jo did not want to be trapped by marriage. She did not want women to be destined only by marriage or death.

Soap foam will exist for only a short time and disappear forever, which I believe can well illustrate Jo’s attitude towards marriage.

About

04/ Spinster

typeface Material

Wood house

In Jo’s minds, she believed freedom is much more important than marriage. She wanted to have a unique and colorful life without limited by society.

About

05/ Romance

Oil waste

typeface Material

Jo hated romance. She loved her family much more than a romantic relationship she said, “I do think that families are the most beautiful things in all the world!”
